


NJTC’s Tutor Apprenticeship Program is the nation's first Tutor Apprenticeship Program (TAP). The program offers working adults with a high school diploma an entry path into education with a starting $30/hour wage, addressing both New Jersey's critical education workforce shortage and persistent student achievement gaps across the state.
The NJTC TAP offers comprehensive:
- Tutor training and mentorship, guiding tutors through key instructional competencies from building student relationships to creating and delivering effective lesson plans.
- Apprentices earn college credits through New Jersey City University.
- Apprentices who successfully complete our program are positioned to be a Tutor, Substitute, Paraprofessional or Classroom Teacher.

What is the NJTC Apprenticeship Program?
NJTC’s Tutor Apprenticeship program is a mix of work-based learning and related technical instruction.
Registered Tutor Apprentices will:
- Earn $30/hour while mastering tutoring competencies of Professionalism, Planning, Instruction and Environment.
- Complete a fellowship of professional coaching to enhance their instructional practices and increase their professional network.
- Earn credits and discounted tuition for working and learning through the NJTC/NJCU partnership.
- Receive a stipend for post-secondary credits (dependent on grant funds).
- Receive a nationally recognized Tutor credential to tutor anywhere in the US.
