The Challenge
New Jersey, like much of the country, is facing a serious education crisis. Statewide assessment data reveal a troubling reality: only 52% of students read at grade level, while just 39% demonstrate grade-level proficiency in mathematics. The crisis cuts across all communities but strikes hardest in our most vulnerable neighborhoods, where students face compounding barriers to success. Behind these statistics are hundreds of thousands of children who urgently need support to recover lost ground and fulfill their potential.
Our Solution
High-impact tutoring is one of the most effective ways to help students recover lost learning and build confidence.
The New Jersey Tutoring Corps (NJTC) delivers research-based, in-person tutoring in math and English Language Arts to K–8 students
across the state.
Our model is built on the gold-standard framework from Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator, which issued NJTC
its Badge for Program Design. We provide consistent, personalized instruction 2–3 times per week through trained tutors who not only
help students master core skills but also spark a renewed love of learning. We prioritize the students who need the most support: 66%
of those we serve attend Title I schools and often start two or more grade levels behind.

Our Solution
The New Jersey Tutoring Corps has pioneered the nation's first tutoring apprenticeship program—a groundbreaking solution that addresses
both the educator shortage and student achievement gaps simultaneously. Our apprentices earn $30/hour while receiving professional
training and mentorship, creating a sustainable pathway into education careers with family-sustaining wages from day one.
This innovative model transforms tutoring from temporary work into a professional occupation, positioning apprentices to either continue
as career tutors or seamlessly transition into teacher apprenticeship programs through our partnership with the Teacher Apprenticeship
Network (TAN).
